You Know What REALLY Ruins The Mood??

What’s the typical joke response when a patient says “a condom ruins the mood?” As a

healthcare provider we’ll quickly respond with, “You know what really ruins the mood? A

BABY!” All jokes aside, if you don’t want to use condoms due to the disruption, the pause

needed, the ruining of the mood, then we have other options that can still prevent pregnancy.

First, let’s dismantle some of the myths of a “ruined mood.” If you have a partner who doesn’t

want to “ruin the mood,” then maybe they aren’t the right partner. If “the mood” is so fragile

that it can be dismantled by birth control, maybe it’s not the right mood. If you can get

comfortable with the proper application of a condom, it can be very quick put on correctly, and

get back to it. And if you are the female partner in this scenario, YOU can get comfortable with

putting a condom on your partner, which can also confirm for you it was done with a condom

that is not expired, damaged, or mishandled.

Next, let’s talk about other options, like FemCap! FemCap is a non-hormonal birth control

option that can block the passage of sperm through the cervix and into the uterus.

The FemCap can be inserted 15 minutes to 40 hours prior to intercourse, so there are no

interruptions. It must remain inserted for at least 6 hours after intercourse and must be

removed before 24 hours after intercourse. So if you think that a date night might go well and

you want to be prepared, you can insert the FemCap before dinner or drinks, then take it out

the next morning. No interruptions, no “ruined mood”, just confidence in your control over

your body and your birth control.

Lastly, any method when used with another method is more effective. The FemCap provides

great birth control, but does not prevent the transmission of STIs (sexually transmitted

infections). So using a condom together with the FemCap can increase the effectiveness of your

birth control, and prevent STIs. We know that talking about these kind of “logistics” around sex

can seem awkward, but take it from someone who talks about awkward things every day, the

more you talk about it, the easier it gets. You deserve a safe, comfortable, consensual, and well-

informed sex-life. And FemCap is happy to help!
